He previously served as Director of National Intelligence during Donald Trump’s first presidency.
The Senate confirmed the nomination of John Ratcliffe to head the Central Intelligence Agency. He became the second official member of US President Donald Trump’s new cabinet, after Secretary of State Mark Rubio. The Associated Press writes about it on Thursday, January 23.
74 senators voted for his candidacy, 25 against.
Ratcliffe promised that if confirmed, he would push the CIA to make greater use of technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, as well as expand its use of data collection on human intelligence.
The newly elected head of the CIA also said that he considers China to be the United States’ greatest geopolitical rival. In addition to him, threats to national security, according to Ratcliffe, are Russia, Iran, North Korea, drug cartels, hacker gangs and terrorist organizations.
From 2020 to 2021, he served as director of national intelligence, an appointment criticized at the time by claims that Trump was using the intelligence community for his political needs. Critics say Ratcliffe is using intelligence to help Trump ahead of the 2020 presidential election.
The Republican Party representative for Texas, Ratcliffe is a former federal prosecutor who actively defended Trump during the impeachment trial.
Let’s remember that earlier this week, former Florida Senator Marco Rubio was confirmed as Secretary of State, becoming the first member of the cabinet of the new US President.
US President Donald Trump revealed the contents of a letter that former President Joe Biden left for him on his desk in the Oval Office before leaving the White House.
