95 deputies voted for Martin’s candidacy, 76 were against. He will lead the government for three years.
The Irish Parliament has voted to appoint Michaul Martin as the country’s Prime Minister. This was reported by The Guardian on Thursday, January 23.
95 deputies voted for Martin’s candidacy, 76 were against.
“I am honored to be appointed to lead the government of this free, democratic and diverse republic,” Martin said.
Martin is expected to form a new Irish government on the same day. Following this, an official ceremony will take place where Irish President Michael Higgins will officially appoint him as Prime Minister.
Parliamentary elections in Ireland took place in November last year. According to their results, Martin’s Fianna Fáil party won the largest number of seats, but not enough to form a one-party government. After weeks of negotiations, centre-right parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael agreed to form a coalition with the support of several independent MPs.
According to the coalition agreement, Michal Martin will lead the government for three years, and his deputy will be Simon Harris, the leader of Fine Gael. After that, they will alternate in their positions – Harris will serve as prime minister for the last two years of the five-year term.
Martin has led the Irish government from June 27, 2020 to December 17, 2022.
We remind you that Ireland will do everything necessary to accelerate Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, said Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney.
