Panama has appealed to the UN due to US President Donald Trump’s threats to take away the Panama Canal.
Panama’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Eloy Alfaro de Alba, sent a letter to Secretary General Antonio Guterres complaining about Trump’s remarks about plans to regain control of the Panama Canal. This was reported by Reuters.
Last December, Trump said the United States could resume control of the Panama Canal, which was transferred to Panama in 1999. The election winner stressed that Panama has set excessively high tariffs for using the canal, and China influences its operating mode. Trump promised that he would not allow the channel to fall into the wrong hands.
Alba noted in the letter that according to the UN Charter, countries “shall refrain in their international relations from the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”
This letter was distributed to the 15 members of the UN Security Council. Panama is a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2025-2026.
Let us recall that the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, in his inaugural speech once again stated that the United States will take control of the Panama Canal, which, according to him, is now being exploited by China.
