The new Syrian authorities terminated the agreement with Russia on the management of the port of Tartus.
The agreement with the Russian company Stroytransgaz on the management of the seaport of Tartus, which was supposed to be valid for 49 years, has been cancelled. Now all income from the port’s activities is now directed to the benefit of Syria. Workers employed at the port will return to Syrian control. This was stated by the director of Tartu customs, Riyad Judi, al-Watan reports.
According to him, outdated mechanisms used by the Russian company will be restored at the port without modernization, although the contract provided for this.
In 2019, the Russian authorities announced an agreement with Syria to lease the port of Tartus to Stroytransgaz for 49 years. The aggressor country had to invest $500 million in its development.
Russian propaganda claims that the port in Tartus is of strategic importance for Moscow, because it is the only one for the aggressor country in the Mediterranean Sea.
Let us recall that the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine stated that the Russian military in Syria is actively discussing the alleged demand of the new government of the country to Moscow – to completely withdraw its military contingent from Syrian territory, including from the bases in Khmemim and Tartus, no later than February 20, 2025 . This step seems to be connected with the desire of the new government in Damascus to achieve the lifting of international sanctions.
