The Russian side did not fulfill its obligations to modernize the port equipment, as stipulated in the contract.
The new Syrian authorities canceled the investment agreement between the Russian company Stroytransgaz and the port of Tartus. It was reported by Radio Liberty.
“All profits from the activities of the port are now directed to the benefit of the Syrian state. The workers working in the port will return to the control of the Syrian side,” said Tartu Customs Director Riyad Judi.
The Russian side did not fulfill its obligations to modernize the port equipment, as stipulated in the contract.
After the change of power in Syria, the activity of the port of Tartus increased, in particular, cargo ships from other countries began to arrive. The Russian naval base is located in the same port.
In 2019, Russia entered into an agreement to lease the port of Tartus for 49 years. Under the contract Stroytransgaza company associated with Gennady Timchenko, is supposed to invest more than $500 million in modernizing the facility.
After the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime, the new Syrian authorities began to reconsider the agreements with Russia.
Let’s remember that the withdrawal of Russian weapons and equipment from Syria, which began after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime, is under threat. Syrian authorities are refusing to allow a Russian evacuation ship to enter the port of Tartus, where Russia’s only foreign naval base is located.
We added that after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, Russia withdrew its military from the front line in the north of the country and from posts in the Alawite Mountains, but did not leave its two main bases.
