Billionaire Elon Musk made a gesture similar to a Nazi greeting during a celebratory speech after the inauguration of new US President Donald Trump on January 20.
Musk, appointed by Trump to co-chair the new Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), celebrated Trump’s election and inauguration at Capital One Arena in Washington, saying that “this is what winning feels like,” CNN reported.
And this was no ordinary victory. “It was a fork in the road of human civilization,” he said, addressing fans. – You know, there are elections that come and go. Some elections, you know, are important, some are not. But this election really mattered. And I just want to thank you for making them happen. Thank you.
My heart goes out to you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is secured. Thanks to you. We will have safe cities, finally, safe cities, secure borders, reasonable costs, basic things,” Musk added, putting his hand to his heart and throwing it up.
Musk’s gesture was similar to the Nazi greeting “Sieg Heil.” The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization that fights anti-Semitism, drew attention to this.
It seems like Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm rather than a Nazi greeting, but again, we understand that people are on the edge,” says a post on the ADL social media page X. “At this point, all parties must give one to one a little leniency, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning.
Musk responded to the tweet with a “thank you” emoji message.
While Musk’s move has been met with enthusiasm in some circles, others on social media have blamed it, particularly Asperger’s Syndrome (which Musk claimed to have) as a potential reason for the clumsy gesture.
Musk’s gesture also caused numerous jokes on social networks.
