The new head of the White House believes that the organization cannot immediately carry out the necessary reforms and requires excessive payments from the United States.
On his first day in office as US President, Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). CNN reported this on Monday, January 20.
The publication recalls that Trump has long criticized the WHO and that his administration formally left the organization in July 2020 amid the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The executive order cited the organization’s “mismanagement during the Covid-19 pandemic originating in Wuhan, China and other global health crises, its failure to promptly implement necessary reforms, and its failure to demonstrate independence from unacceptable political influence of member countries as reasons for US withdrawal.” WHO”.
“This is a big decision,” Trump told an aide before signing the order, citing his 2020 decision and his belief that the US pays the organization’s bills compared to other countries.
The order also states that the WHO continues to unfairly demand excessive payments from the United States.
The publication also quoted comments from former Biden administration official Dr. Ashish Jha, who served as the White House’s coordinator for the Covid-19 response, called the WHO’s decision a “strategic mistake.”
“The WHO is a pretty important organization, and America’s exit creates a political vacuum that only one country can fill, and that’s China,” Jha said.
He suggested that China increase its role at the WHO in the absence of US funding and leadership, which could “give China more political influence around the world.”
Jha also warned that the US withdrawal weakens the WHO, as the organization relies heavily on US personnel and expertise, especially in monitoring global flu epidemics.
A complete withdrawal from the WHO takes a year, and during this time the US is required to continue funding it. At the same time, Jha doubted that Trump would follow this rule.
Let’s recall that his team reported Trump’s intention to withdraw the United States from the WHO in December.
