Analysts have identified hundreds of manipulative posts on social networks aimed at undermining support for Ukraine and promoting far-right forces in Germany.
Russia’s disinformation campaign aims to increase the influence of far-right parties Alternative for Germany (AfD) and is destroying trust in the country’s leading political forces ahead of the elections on February 23. This is stated in a report by the German think tank CeMAS. This was reported by Reuters on Monday, January 20.
Experts have seen hundreds of messages on Platform X over the past month. These publications bear the typical hallmarks of the Doppelgaenger campaign used by Russia to undermine Western support for Ukraine.
This disinformation network was created after Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Its purpose is to spread fake materials that look like Western media news, according to a report by the German Foreign Ministry.
According to CeMAS, Russian propagandists are actively criticizing the Green Party and Chancellor Olaf Scholz for supporting Ukraine, accusing the conservatives of a lack of trust, but at the same time supporting the far-right AfD. Messages are spread through fake or genuine sites with distorted news, images and other content.
Such posts received more than 2.8 million views thanks to the networks of fake accounts that spread these messages.
We remind you that the AfD ranks second in the sympathy ratings in the election, which may complicate the formation of a coalition for the German government after the election.
Germany remains one of Ukraine’s biggest allies, providing significant financial and military aid. This prompts aggressive behavior from Moscow, which is trying to influence European countries, said the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV). In November, the department created a special task force to combat foreign interference in elections.
Recall that Musk called Scholz an “idiot” after the collapse of the coalition in Germany. In addition, the businessman suggested that only the AdN seemed capable of solving the problems facing Germany. These statements come amid preparations for parliamentary elections in Germany scheduled for February 2025.
