A group of scammers from the Cherkasy region pretended to be military.
Three attackers created fake accounts on social networks and collected funds allegedly for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. To mislead citizens, they used photographs of documents of Ukrainian military personnel found in open sources and published announcements about raising funds supposedly for their needs. Law enforcement officers established that the scammers thus embezzled more than 2.5 million UAH, and spent the money on their own needs. The National Police reported this.
Investigators and cyber police tracked the entire chain of cash flows and identified the persons who registered fake accounts of military personnel on social networks and posted fundraising announcements. The police conducted 11 searches at the places of residence and registration of the defendants in the Cherkasy and Kyiv regions.
Three defendants were informed of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 190 (as amended until August 11, 2023), part 4 of Art. 190 (fraud) and part 2 of Art. 209 (legalization (laundering) of property obtained by criminal means) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The perpetrators face up to eight years in prison.
Let us remind you that in November last year in the Odessa region, four members of a criminal group were exposed, posing as police officers and TCC officers, demanding money.
