The idea of sending European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine has gained popularity in recent months among Western leaders.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has authorized the participation of German troops in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. He said this on Saturday, January 18, in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ).
According to him, the military of the Bundeswehr can take part in ensuring the security of the demilitarized zone in Ukraine, subject to a ceasefire. However, the minister added, “this issue will be discussed when the time comes.”
“We are the largest partner of NATO in Europe. Therefore, it is clear that we will play a certain role and must take responsibility,” said Pistorius, answering a question about the possible appearance of German troops in the demilitarized zone between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. .
According to the minister, the key is how to create a level of security for Ukraine that will not allow a repeated attack from the Kremlin in the future.
As Pistorius said, he plans to travel to the United States in the near future to speak with representatives of the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
“The candidate for the position of US Secretary of Defense has not been approved yet, however, we are interested in an early meeting and exchange of views in Washington in early February,” Pistorius said.
The German minister also commented on his visit to Ukraine, noting that Ukrainians “feel nervous and unsure about what might happen in Washington when the new US President Donald Trump takes office.”
It was previously reported that more than half of German residents support the idea of sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.
