In 2023, Nigeria eliminated its fuel subsidy, which caused the price of many commodities to rise. Fuel costs have increased fivefold in 18 months.
In Nigeria, as a result of the explosion of a fuel tanker followed by a fire, more than 70 people died and at least 56 were injured, the report of the Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, writes Newsx.
The explosion happened after a tanker truck had an accident.
The accident was said to have occurred along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway opposite Baddegi petrol station. The fuel tanker overturned at speed. They tried to pump fuel out of it in another fuel tanker, but the fuel started leaking onto the ground. Local residents tried to collect the spilled fuel, as its prices have recently increased due to the economic crisis in the country.
Suddenly, one of the fuel tankers caught fire, the fire spread to another truck, and there was an explosion.
According to NEMA, the victims were local residents and bystanders. Most of the victims were burned beyond recognition.
At least 67 people, including many children, have died at three Christmas charity events in Nigeria in recent days.
