The new order maintains US authority to impose sanctions in the event of a threat to Syria’s peace, security, stability or territorial integrity, as well as human rights violations.
US President Joe Biden revised the 2019 decree that imposed sanctions against Turkey for the Peace Spring military operation in Syria and signed a new document that takes into account the current situation. This was reported by Hürriyet Daily News.
The explanation to Congress indicates that some of the measures provided for in the old order are no longer relevant because the operations ended more than five years ago.
Biden emphasized the changing geopolitical realities in Syria and the circumstances that previously formed the basis for sanctions. The new order maintains the United States’ authority to impose sanctions in the event of a threat to Syria’s peace, security, stability or territorial integrity, as well as human rights violations.
Let’s recall that the first sanctions order was signed on October 14, 2019 by then President Donald Trump. This includes restrictions against Turkey’s defense, interior and energy ministers.
Let’s remember that Trump called Turkey a “major force” in the future of Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
