Vadim Kobzev and Alexey Liptser were sentenced to five years in prison, and Igor Sergunin, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 3.6 years.
The district court in Russian Petushki sentenced three former lawyers of Alexei Navalny – Vadim Kobzev, Alexey Liptser and Igor Sergunin – to real terms of imprisonment. They were accused of participating in an extremist community. This was reported by the pro-government Russian news agency. Interfax on Friday, January 17th.
Kobzev was sentenced to five years and six months in prison to be served in a general correctional colony of the regime, Liptser – five years in prison, Sergunin – three years and six months.
The court also banned each of the defendants from providing legal services for three years.
The court maintained the preventive measure – detention – for the defendants until the verdict enters into legal force. Defense lawyers must challenge the verdict after agreeing the position with the clients.
Kobzev and Liptser pleaded not guilty. Sergunin pleaded guilty during the investigation.
The state prosecution requested that the defendants’ lawyers be sentenced to five to five years and 11 months in prison.
The trial took place in the Petushinsky court from September 12, 2024, behind closed doors. Prosecutors requested the restriction of access to the hearings, citing a letter from the Center for Combating Extremism of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Center “E”), which stated that participants in the trial were at risk of threatened by members of the extremist community, whose participation was placed on the defendant’s lawyers.
The lawyers passed on information from Navalny and Navalny as the leader of an extremist community when he was in a colony in the Vladimir region, prosecutors believe.
We remind you that information about the death of the “main opposition leader” of Russia appeared on February 16, 2024. In Russia, they said that he died of a blood clot.
