British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Ukraine today, January 16, on an unannounced visit to meet with President Vladimir Zelensky.
The Guardian reports this.
It is noted that during Starmer’s visit, Ukraine and Britain will sign an agreement on a “100-year partnership” that will deepen the existing defense relationship and will provide for further military assistance to Kyiv amid fears that the United States may begin to scale back its support.
Starmer will discuss what security guarantees the UK can offer Kyiv, including the possibility of British troops participating in the post-war peacekeeping force.
The “100-year partnership” agreement between Ukraine and Britain is also intended to strengthen economic ties in non-military areas such as science and technology.
This is Starmer’s first trip to Ukraine since taking office six months ago. Before that, he visited Ukraine in 2023, when he was the leader of the opposition, and twice held negotiations with Zelensky already as prime minister.
