The US president-elect called on NATO countries to increase defense spending to five percent of GDP and demanded that Europe take a bigger share of support for Ukraine.
European states must take their NATO commitments seriously and increase defense spending. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this at a press conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Wednesday, January 15, in response to the call of the future US President Donald Trump for the Alliance countries to allocate 5 % of GDP on defense.
Tusk noted that no one but the EU countries can solve the problems on the European continent, and if they want the new US administration to invest in European security, they must take seriously their obligations as members of the North Atlantic Alliance.
“Here we must all agree with President Trump – no one can solve our security problems for us If all European countries start to seriously interpret their obligations to NATO, I am sure that America will be happy to cooperate with us if it sees that We are a serious partner,” Tusk stressed.
At the next NATO summit, the head of the Polish government is confident, every country will be obliged to “take defense seriously.” We cannot continue to pretend that the 1-2% of GDP allocated by some countries to defense is enough.
“So instead of guessing what President Trump’s plans are, let’s take the obligations of each NATO country seriously,” Tusk urged.
He added that Poland allocates 4.7% of GDP to defense and called on other NATO countries to do the same.
Germany says it does not have the money in its budget to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, as US President-elect Donald Trump has demanded from NATO countries.
Lithuania plans to allocate around 4% of GDP to defense by 2025.
