The arrest of suspended South Korean President Yoon Seok-yol took place on Wednesday, January 15.
Law enforcement officers detained the impeached head of state at his residence. There he was protected by security guards who did not allow investigators to execute the arrest warrant. To make the arrest, officers used stepladders to climb into the windows of the residence. This was reported by Yonhap News.
Subsequently, a convoy of police vehicles left the presidential residence complex in central Seoul and headed south to the office of the Office of Anti-Corruption Investigations of Officials. There, the ousted president will be questioned in connection with the short-term martial law he imposed in December 2024.
It is noted that for the first time in the history of South Korea, a temporarily suspended but current president of the country was arrested.
Let us recall that on December 31, 2024, a South Korean court issued an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk-yol, who was impeached due to martial law. The decision came after he ignored all three subpoenas from the anti-corruption agency asking him to appear for questioning about martial law.
