Hepatitis A (infectious hepatitis, Botkin’s disease) is a disease that occurs with damage to the liver and biliary system.

Contaminated blueberries sold in a supermarket chain in the Netherlands caused 12 people to contract hepatitis A. This was reported on Tuesday, January 14, by the portal Nu.nl with reference to the representative of the Dutch National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) Elko Franz.

“The condition of the two patients was so serious that they had to be hospitalized,” he said. The age of the patients ranged from 25 to 77 years.

It was indicated that initially the institute began to receive messages from general practitioners approached by patients with hepatitis A. Later, the municipal health service found out that blueberries were the cause.

We are talking about frozen berries in 1 kg bags with an expiration date until April 14, 2026. Those were delivered from Poland.

According to Franz, the virus was found on the surface of blueberries.

“This virus is transmitted from person to person through feces. It is possible that the berry picker did not wash his hands properly after using the bathroom. The cause may be dirty water that was poured on the berries,” said Franz.

The supermarket chain urged customers to return the berries to the store, even if the packaging had been opened.

The Russian military command plans to form assault units from prisoners with hepatitis B and C and send them on meat “attacks” in Ukraine.
