Now Greenland wants to gain independence, but does not plan to cut ties with Denmark.
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede says he is ready to talk to US President-elect Donald Trump. This statement came amid Trump’s statements about the need to transfer the island to US control, Reuters reported on Saturday, January 11.
It was noted that at a press conference in Copenhagen, Egedi was asked if he had contacted the US President-elect.
“No, but we are ready to talk,” the prime minister replied.
Danish Prime Minister Matte Frederiksen, who was also present at the event, said he had requested a meeting with Trump, but did not expect it to happen before his inauguration.
Egede emphasized that Greenland’s desire for independence does not imply a severance of relations with Denmark.
“We want to be masters of our own home. This is something that everyone should respect. But this does not mean that we will abandon all ties, cooperation and relations with Denmark,” he said.
Let’s remember that Trump is not ruling out the use of military force to control Greenland or the Panama Canal, which he has talked about in recent weeks.
