Most of the requests came from citizens of Syria, Afghanistan, Venezuela and Turkey. Germany remains the most attractive destination for refugees.
Last year, the number of initial asylum applications in the European Union, Norway and Switzerland decreased by approximately 12% (or by more than 130 thousand applications). DW reported this on Saturday, January 11, citing data from the EU Asylum Agency (EUAA).
It is known that in 2004 there were 1.008 million such applicants. In 2023, this number will be 1.14 million.
Of all the 29 countries included in these statistics, the largest number of applications was still submitted in Germany – almost 236 thousand. Spain is in second place (165.4 thousand), followed by France (158.5 thousand) and Italy (154.8 thousand). Hungary received the fewest asylum applications throughout 2024 (29 in total).
Most EU asylum seekers last year came from Syria (15%), followed by Afghanistan (8.7%), Venezuela (7.3%) and Turkey (5.5%).
Over the past year, the EU has introduced several initiatives aimed at reducing the number of asylum applications. These include strengthening border controls in the Schengen area, expanding border security through new surveillance systems and barriers, and concluding migration agreements with states such as Tunisia and Egypt.
In the near future, the EU intends to conclude two more migration agreements – with Jordan and Morocco.
Earlier, the Czech Republic said they expected a new wave of refugees from Ukraine, but there was no surge.
