A petition to the Cabinet of Ministers calling for the submission to the National Security and Defense Council of proposals on the application of sanctions against the former deputy head of the Administration of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych Andrei Portnov today, January 11, received the necessary 25 thousand votes for consideration.
This is evidenced by data on the petition page on the government website.
The petition was submitted on December 24. It notes that the United States imposed sanctions on Portnov in 2021, the justification for which was noted that:
- in 2019, he “took measures to control the Ukrainian judicial system, influenced relevant legislation, tried to install loyal officials in senior judicial positions and buy court decisions”;
- in mid-2019, “conspired with a high-ranking Ukrainian official to shape the country’s highest legal institutions in his favor and influence the Constitutional Court of Ukraine. In addition, Portnov took part in an attempt to influence the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine.”
In my opinion, the official justification of the United States indicates the actions of Andrei Vladimirovich Portnov, which create real and/or potential threats to the national interests of Ukraine, which may be the basis for the application of sanctions by the National Security and Defense Council, the author of the petition notes.
After the events of the Revolution of Dignity, Portnov left Ukraine and lived in Austria. In May 2019, he returned to Ukraine, and in August of the same year, the SBU closed the treason case against him.
In the summer of 2022, the draft Scheme, citing its own sources, reported that Portnov left Ukraine in early June of that year.
