The Social Democratic Party of Germany nominated Olaf Scholz, and the far-right Alternative for Germany nominated its leader Alice Weidel.
In Germany, the names of the first two candidates for the position of chancellor have been announced. German media reported this on Saturday, January 11.
So, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has officially confirmed that it has nominated current Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Almost all of the 600 congressional delegates voted for him.
Scholz promised to win the election and “surprise those who think they already know how it will end.”
In turn, the far-right Alternative for Germany nominated its own candidate for chancellor for the first time. Predictably, he became the leader of the party, Alice Weidel. He was elected as a candidate by standing. No vote counting.
As you know, at the beginning of November 2024 in Germany, the government coalition consisting of SPD, Free Democratic Party (VDP) and Union 90/Greens collapsed. And in December, the Bundestag voted for a vote of no confidence in Scholz.
Snap elections to the Bundestag are now expected to take place on February 23.
