Reuters reports that NATO countries do not support Trump’s idea of increasing defense spending to 5% of GDP. But they will probably agree to go beyond the current target of 2%.
Trump’s proposal is “politically and economically impossible for almost all members of the Alliance,” the publication’s analysts say. After all, this will require hundreds of billions of dollars of additional funding.
Some officials believe Trump’s 5% target is a deliberately high starting point for negotiations and expect he may agree to “something closer to 3%.”
Among NATO countries, Poland spends the largest share of GDP on defense – 4.12%, followed by Estonia with 3.43% and the United States with 3.38%. Eight states have not yet reached the 2% target.
