Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Cros received letters containing a poisonous substance. One of his subordinates was hospitalized. It was reported by Politico.
The incident took place on November 22, 2024, but the Belgian prosecutor’s office reported it after learning the results of the analysis of the suspicious powder. The letter turned out to contain traces of strychnine. This toxic substance can be fatal if swallowed and can cause skin irritation on contact.
“The worker opened the letter and then he felt unwell then he was taken to the hospital, but no one else was injured,” explained Alexandra De Croe’s spokesperson Barend Leits.
According to him, the incident shocked the Prime Minister and office staff. The injured worker is doing well. Every precaution was taken to prevent further damage.
In total, the prime minister’s office received three letters: on November 20 and 22, and on December 9. The investigation is still ongoing and no suspects have been arrested at this stage.
