Matte Frederiksen’s comments came two days after several statements by the newly elected US President.
Danish Prime Minister Matte Frederiksen told reporters after a meeting with other country officials that he offered to talk to newly elected US President Donald Trump over his remarks about taking control in Greenland. Politico reported it.
“We (Trump – ed.) offered a conversation, and I hope it will happen,” the official emphasized, adding that he did not expect the dialogue to take place before the inauguration on January 20.
According to the Danish prime minister, Trump has not yet responded to the proposal.
He said there was “no reason to believe” that the new US president was planning an invasion of Greenland and stressed the “close cooperation” between the two NATO allies.
Frederiksen’s comments came two days after the newly elected US president did not rule out using military or economic force to gain control of Greenland.
The Prime Minister of Denmark coldly responded to Trump’s remarks by declaring: “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen played down Trump’s threats.
“You can take Donald Trump seriously without taking him literally,” his message said.
He also said that Denmark has “full respect” for Greenland’s desire for independence.
As is known, Trump has not ruled out the use of military force to control Greenland or the Panama Canal, which he has discussed in recent weeks.
