Scholz’s office does not see the need for immediate action, as it considers the 4 billion euros provided for the previous budget sufficient.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius seek to allocate around three billion euros for the supply of arms to Ukraine before the Bundestag elections. But Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office may fight it, Der Spiegel reports, citing sources.
The list of weapons for Ukraine was compiled shortly after the fall of the German coalition government in November 2024. It includes three Iris-T air defense batteries with missiles for them, Patriot missiles, ten wheeled howitzers and artillery ammunition.
The German Foreign Ministry and Ministry of Defense then explained the need for additional aid by saying that Kyiv’s needs could not be predicted in previous planning. We are talking about the acceleration of the Russian offensive and the fact that after the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential election, it became unclear whether Washington will continue to provide military support to Ukraine.
The implementation of this plan stopped in early January due to the fact that Scholz’s department has not officially clarified that it does not support the allocation of additional funds to Kyiv. The publication said the reason given was the reluctance to face the future German government with a reality.
Scholz’s office does not see the need for immediate action, as it considers the approximately 4 billion euros provided in the previous budget for 2025 for military aid to Ukraine to be sufficient. They also recalled the possibility of using the $50 billion loan provided by the G7 using proceeds from Russia’s fixed assets.
Sources suggest Scholz is reluctant to announce further arms sales to Ukraine amid an election campaign to avoid alienating potential SPD voters.
We remind you that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in his New Year’s speech spoke of the need to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
