The team of US President-elect Donald Trump will reconsider its approach to the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war, writes the Financial Times, citing sources.
Donald Trump has postponed his election promise to end Russia’s war against Ukraine “within 24 hours” and is now giving it several months, writes the Financial Times.
There is no solution
The publication spoke to unnamed European officials who have been discussing a possible end to the war with the Trump team in recent weeks. According to them, during the negotiations it became clear that the colleagues of the US president-elect have not yet decided how to resolve this conflict.
“The entire Trump team is obsessed with power and looking strong, so they are reconsidering their approach to Ukraine,” one person told the Financial Times. The incoming Trump administration fears that its decisions on Ukraine will be compared to the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan under Joe Biden, he added.
Trump and his associates, notes the Financial Times, said in recent days that the war between Russia and Ukraine could end within a few months after the inauguration of the US President-elect.
So, Trump suggested that he will hold negotiations with Putin in the next six months. In this regard, Keith Kellogg, nominated by the president-elect for the post of special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, said that Trump will be able to offer an “acceptable solution” to the end of the war in the near future. Kellogg said his personal goal is to end the conflict within 100 days.
The European allies of Washington and Kyiv took the postponement of the end of the war as a sign that the Trump administration will not immediately abandon support for Ukraine, writes the Financial Times.
Peacekeepers in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called the possible deployment of a foreign contingent in the country one of the best tools for forcing Russia into peace. Opening a contact group meeting with Ukraine at the US base in Ramstein in Germany, he called on the allies to be more practical on this issue.
“We all understand that today Putin’s goals remain unchanged. He wants to completely destroy Ukraine – and destroy all of us, and you too. Therefore, our goal is to find as many tools as possible to force Russia into peace.
I believe that this type of deployment of partner contingents is one of the best tools. Let’s be more practical in making this possible,” Zelensky said.
He added that Ukrainian authorities have heard signals from the UK in support of this idea.
“We have to be bold, and we have to offer really powerful tools,” he stressed. As an example of such a tool, the Ukrainian leader mentioned the operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region, calling it one of Ukraine’s biggest successes in the entire war.
Support won’t stop?
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who met with Trump at his Florida resort Mar-a-Lago last week, ruled out the possibility of the United States withdrawing support for Ukraine after the inauguration of the 47 presidents.
“It is clear that a new chapter will begin for Europe and the whole world – in just 11 days, a time when we must cooperate more actively, rely on each other and achieve more significant results when together,” Zelensky said at the Ramstein meeting. about Trump’s inauguration that will take place on January 20.
During the meeting, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that if the United States decides to refuse to continue the meetings in the Ramstein format, Ukraine’s European allies will have to take responsibility.
