The Lebanese parliament has elected army commander Joseph Aoun to the position of president of the country. This was reported by AP on Thursday, January 9.
99 out of 128 representatives voted for his candidacy.

The pro-Iranian group Hezbollah was unable to elect its presidential candidate.
Joseph Aoun enjoys the support of the United States and Saudi Arabia.
In the past two years, there have been 12 unsuccessful attempts to elect a Lebanese president.
It was previously reported that the European Union, against the backdrop of Israeli strikes, is ready to allocate 200 million euros to Lebanon.
