Peter Szijjártó expressed the non-acceptance of “external imposition” and the right of the country to “choose for itself” in the matter of energy sources.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó on his Facebook page announced the possibility of blocking Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
He claims it is
will be a response to the registration in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the bill No. 12380, which prohibits the transit of Russian oil and gas through the territory of Ukraine during martial law.
The Hungarian official hastened to remind that decisions on the admission of new members to the EU are made jointly and unanimously by all member countries.
According to him, each state has the highest right to choose sources and routes of supply of energy resources necessary for its functioning, and external influence in this matter is unacceptable.
“No one from the outside can influence it. No one has the right to impose more expensive, less safe energy sources on other countries,” the official assured.
Against the backdrop of this statement, he decided to recall Kyiv’s European integration aspirations.
“A country concluding an association agreement with the EU or even wishing to become a member of the EU is obliged to contribute to the EU’s energy security by providing transport routes. Therefore, the closure of route of gas or oil is unacceptable and contrary to the expectations related to the EU integration,” threatened Szijjártó.
It should be noted that representatives of the Hungarian government, even before stopping the transfer of gas and oil from Russia, opposed Ukraine’s accession to the EU. In particular, Peter Szijjarto himself previously made a corresponding statement. He then spoke of the possible “coming of military conflict in Europe.”
Let’s remember that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry recently suggested that the Hungarian side admit that its priority is the strengthening of Russia, not the EU and the United States.
