The concerns of the United States about security in the Arctic are justified due to the increased activity of Russia and China in the region, the Danish Foreign Ministry emphasized.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lykke Rasmussen, commenting on the recent statements of US President-elect Donald Trump about Greenland, said that the country can be independent if its residents want it, but it will not become a state of the US. This was reported by Reuters on Wednesday, January 8.
“We recognize that Greenland has its own ambitions. If these are realized, Greenland will become independent, although it is unlikely that there are ambitions one can become a federal state within the United States,” explained the diplomat
At the same time, the minister noted that US concerns about security in the Arctic are justified due to the increased activity of Russia and China in the region.
“I don’t think we have a crisis in foreign policy that we are open to talking to the American people about how we can work more closely together to ensure the realization of American ambitions,” the foreign minister added.
Let’s add that earlier the Prime Minister of Denmark, Matte Frederiksen, responded to Trump’s statements about the possibility of using force to control Greenland, saying that he “cannot imagine such a thing.”
Let’s remember that Trump is not ruling out the use of military force to control Greenland or the Panama Canal, which he has talked about in recent weeks.
