US President-elect Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of an invasion of Greenland or Panama when he responded to a question from reporters during a press conference.
Politico reported this today, January 7.
Asked whether he would rule out economic or military coercion to gain control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, Trump noted:
I’m not going to commit myself to this. No. Something might have to be done.
According to Trump, the United States needs these territories “for economic security.”
Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for the United States to acquire Greenland.
We need Greenland for national security purposes, he said. “People don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if it does, they should give it up because we need it for national security.”
Greenland, which has a population of about 60,000, was a Danish colony until it became self-governing with its own parliament in 1979. It remains Danish territory, and Copenhagen controls its foreign and defense policy.
Danish Prime Minister Matte Frederiksen, who rejected Trump’s first offer to buy Greenland back in 2019 as “absurd”, recently – before Trump refused to rule out the possibility of taking Greenland by force – reiterated that Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.
There is great support among the people of Greenland that Greenland is not for sale and will not be for sale in the future, she stressed.
At the same time, Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., arrived in Greenland for what he described as a “private” visit.
Trump also previously demanded that Panama restore ownership of the canal to the United States. The US transferred control of this critical maritime trade route to Panama in 1977.
Listen, the Panama Canal is vital to our country. It is operated by China. China! And we gave the Panama Canal to Panama, not China, Trump claims.
For his part, Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino has already said that the country’s control over the channel is “non-negotiable.”
