Antal Rogan was placed on the US sanctions list in accordance with the Magnitsky Act, which provides for the prosecution of people responsible for serious violations of human rights and corruption around the world.
The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against a high-ranking Hungarian government official and one of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s closest colleagues, Antal Rogan, European Pravda reports.
Antal Rogan was sanctioned by the United States under the Magnitsky Act, which provides for the prosecution of people responsible for serious human rights violations and corruption around the world.
As noted by the US Treasury Department, Rogan is the Hungarian Prime Minister’s chief of staff, overseeing several government agencies, particularly the National Communications Authority, the Digital Government Agency and the Hungarian Tourism Agency.
“Having a government position, Rogan organized a system for distributing government contracts and Hungarian resources to his associates, to people loyal to him and the Fidesz political party,” the report said.
Thus, Orban’s colleague took actual control of several strategic sectors of the Hungarian economy, the proceeds from which went to politicians loyal to him, the US Treasury added.
Rogan is the head of the Hungarian government’s media empire, which covers the entire country and spreads pro-government propaganda.
According to the sanctions, all US assets related to Antal Rogan, as well as companies in which Rogan directly or indirectly owns more than 50% of the shares, will be frozen.
Antal Rogan became the first high-ranking Hungarian official to be subject to US sanctions.
Let’s recall that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó accused Ukraine of putting the European Union in a difficult economic situation by stopping the transit of Russian gas.
