The opposition in Venezuela announced the victory of its candidate Edmund Gonzalez, who has the support of the United States.
Venezuela severed diplomatic ties with Paraguay after its President Santiago Peña said he would not recognize Nicolas Maduro’s election victory. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil announced this on his Telegram channel.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela categorically rejects the statements of the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, who, ignoring international law and the principle of non-intervention, repeats an unsuccessful practice that reminds the political fantasies of Five Group with its senseless adventure called Guaidó,” Maduro’s representative wrote.
Before this, Pena wrote on the social network X that he spoke with the candidate of the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmund Gonzalez, and expressed confidence that the oppositionist will win the 2024 presidential elections.
The presidential election in Venezuela took place on July 28. The electoral commission declared the victory of Nicolas Maduro, who has ruled the country for two terms since 2013, with a result of 51.2 percent of the vote. International observers were not allowed to attend the election.
Venezuela has already experienced a similar crisis after Maduro was re-elected to a second term in 2018. The country was then gripped by thousands of protests, and the opposition declared the speaker of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, as the country’s leader. He was supported by several Western countries, including the United States, Israel and the Lima Group, an association of Latin American states.
It will be recalled that on July 29, the current President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, was declared the winner of the elections with 51% of the vote, compared to 44% for the leader of the opposition, Edmund Gonzalez. Opposition parties say their candidate won 70% of the vote.
After the announcement of the results of the presidential election, spontaneous rallies began in the country. Their participants believe that the authorities rigged the voting results in favor of Maduro.
