EU confirms Pridnestrovie’s rejection of energy aid

Moldovan authorities have already offered energy and humanitarian aid to Transnistria, but this aid has not yet been accepted.

EU spokeswoman Anitta Hipper said that Transnistria should take advantage of the support offered by Chisinau to solve the energy crisis caused by the cessation of gas supplies by Gazprom. Ukrinform reported this on Monday, January 6.

“The Moldovan authorities are currently offering energy and humanitarian aid to Transnistria, but the proposed aid has not yet been accepted by us in Tiraspol to initiate contact with Chisinau in the interest of the local population,” said Hipper.

While the representative of the European Commission, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, added that the EU maintains constant contact with the Moldovan government and contributes to solving problems. He emphasized that from 2022, Moldova receives gas from the EU market, and its power grid is also synchronized with the European one. It helped in providing electricity to the country even in difficult conditions.

The European Commission is promoting cooperation between European electricity grid operators and the Energy Community Secretariat so that Moldova can receive more electricity if needed. At the same time, the European Commission called on all member countries to show solidarity with Moldova in this difficult situation.

“From 2022, Moldova’s gas reserves come exclusively from the EU gas market, and this covers its gas needs. Our relations with the Moldovan authorities remain strong at both political levels and technical. We hope to find solutions that will cover the entire territory of Moldova “So that there will be no more blackouts or the need to declare a state of emergency, as happened at the end of last year, to avoid such situations at the start of coldest month,” Itkonen said.

We remind you that the self-proclaimed Transnistrian Moldavian Republic (PMR) did not take advantage of Moldova’s offer to buy gas from Europe.

As you know, on January 1, Ukraine suspended Russian gas transit. The contract with Gazprom has expired. As a result, gas supplies to Transnistria (left bank) via Moldova (right bank) were also stopped. The buyer of gas from Gazprom is its subsidiary in Moldova, which sends the entire volume of purchased fuel to Transnistria.

Right Bank Moldova has been buying gas for domestic needs from European suppliers for several years. And Transnistria was left without gas, heat and hot water. It was also learned yesterday that the “republic” refused gas from Europe. They still rely on Russia.
