June 2022 was the third hottest June on record globally, according to data from Europe’s Copernicus climate change service released on Thursday. June 2019 and 2021 are the 1st and 2nd hottest months in the world.
In a press release, the Global Climate Observation Program from satellites, ships, aircraft and meteorological stations explains that several “Features:took place in June 2022. June’s global average temperature was about 0.31°C above the 1991-2020 average.
More frequent and severe in later years
In Europe, it was the second hottest June on record, about 1.6°C above average. June 2019 is the hottest June ever recorded on the Old Continent. Copernicus specifically notes the extreme temperatures recorded from Spain to Italy. “Southwest Europe, which experienced its first heat wave in the second half of May, experienced another exceptional temperature four weeks later, peaking on June 17.“, the press release states.
Apart from this region, countries such as France, Japan and the US also experienced severe heat waves. Conversely, the study shows colder temperatures in Greenland and much of South America.
