Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that Poland acted “childishly” by not inviting the Hungarian ambassador to the ceremony marking its EU presidency.
Pathetic and childish are the only words I can use to describe this decision,” the statement said.
Poland did not invite Orban and the Hungarian ambassador to the EU presidency ceremony in Gdansk. Poland has held the presidency of the Council of the EU since 1 January 2025.
The reason was Budapest granting political asylum to former Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski, accused of corruption. He is under investigation in Poland for allegations of misuse of public funds.
When we invited guests to our gala almost a month ago, we invited the entire diplomatic corps. But after the situation with Romanowski, Minister (Foreign Affairs of Poland) Sikorski decided that the Hungarian ambassador was not a welcome guest in the theater today, said Deputy Polish Minister for European Affairs Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czerniecka.
