Austin’s participation in the upcoming UDCG meeting comes after the United States Department of Defense announced on Monday two aid packages totaling $2.5 billion for Ukraine.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will arrive at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on January 7 to participate in the 25th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. This was announced on Friday, January 3, by the Deputy Press Secretary of the Pentagon Sabrina Singh, writes the US Department of Defense.
Singh noted that Austin’s planned participation in the meeting was intended to “reaffirm our continued commitment to Ukraine with defense secretaries and military leaders from around the world.”
“Secretary Austin will focus on providing practical and coordinated support that will strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend itself now and deter future Russian aggression,” he said.
Speaking about aid to Ukraine, he said the United States would transfer weapons to Ukraine as “available.”
“It is very possible that you will see that after this administration, more funds will continue to flow to Ukraine, this is quite normal,” he explained.
It is known that a new meeting in the Ramstein format is scheduled for January 9 in Germany. The Ramstein format emerged in 2022 to coordinate military support for Ukraine under US auspices. It unites more than 50 countries in the world, most of which are members of NATO.
The Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine in the Ramstein format will meet on January 9 at the air base of the same name in Germany.
Let’s recall that at the end of December 2024, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umerov, after a telephone conversation with his Portuguese counterpart Nuno Melo, announced a meeting in the Ramstein format in January 2025.
