US President-elect Donald Trump is scheduled to appear for sentencing in his criminal hush-money case on January 10.
New York State Judge Juan Merchan in Manhattan rejected Trump’s request to overturn his guilty verdict in the case of payments to a porn star for silence, but made it clear that the politician’s conclusion should not be expected. Bloomberg wrote this on Friday, December 3.
The judge explained that it would be wrong to overturn the jury’s verdict, but at the same time emphasized that he did not believe that the sentence should include imprisonment.
“This court has carefully considered the arguments of the parties and has come to the conclusion that reversing the jury’s verdict is not the best way to reconcile the interests,” the judge stressed.
“The laws do not provide an opportunity to reverse criminal acts committed before taking office, and do not create a new type of immunity for the elected president,” added Merchan.
The publication indicated that Trump, 78, could receive up to four years in prison after a jury in May found him guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush payments to a adult film star before the 2016 election. The case stems from a $130,000 payment by Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Trump’s representatives called the court’s decision a “witch hunt.”
Bloomberg recalled that Trump faced four criminal charges during his presidential campaign, but the hush money case was the only one that came to trial before the election. Two cases were dismissed after his victory, and one case in Georgia over attempts to overturn the election results. 2020 is still not over.
