Moldova pegged the exchange rate to the euro instead of the dollar.
Moldova switched to using the euro instead of the dollar as the base currency for calculating the official exchange rate of the national currency, the leu.
From today, the euro becomes the base currency of the exchange rate in Moldova. With more than 60% of our trade and 70% of remittances carried out in euros, this move strengthens our economic ties with the EU, bringing more stability and predictability for all Moldovans, President Maia Sandu said on her website.
Previously, the National Bank of Moldova explained that the transition from using the US dollar to the euro reflects Moldova’s economic shift to EU markets and will reduce exchange rate fluctuations.
