The FBI is establishing links to the terrorist organization of the 42-year-old American who committed the hit-and-run. The media wrote that he was a former US military.
The pickup truck of the man who plowed into people celebrating the New Year in New Orleans last night was carrying an Islamic State (ISIS) flag. This was reported on Wednesday, January 1, by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The department noted that after driving through the crowd, the driver got out of the car and opened fire on police. Law enforcement returned fire, resulting in the man’s death. Two police officers were injured and taken to a local hospital.
“The man has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Dean Jabbar, a United States citizen from Texas. He was driving a Ford pickup truck that was likely rented and we are working to determine how the man owned the vehicle. An ISIS flag was on the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential connections and ties to terrorist organizations,” the statement said.
The FBI noted that there were also weapons and a “potential improvised explosive device” in the pickup truck, and there were also “potential explosive devices” located throughout the street.
The FBI added that it is classifying this incident as an act of terrorism.
Meanwhile, CNN, citing two American officials, wrote that the suspect had previously served in the US Army.
