Crew members could be arrested if they try to violate the travel ban, local law enforcement officials explained.
Finnish police have banned the seven crew members of the Eagle S tanker from leaving the country because they could damage four submarine cables in the Baltic Sea. This was said by the investigator of the criminal investigation of the Central Criminal Police Department, Elina Katajamäki, reports the Finnish publication Yle.
“The travel ban is a less restrictive measure than arrest and detention, and it is used because the police have an interest in ensuring pre-trial investigations and those involved remain available during investigative measures. ,” he explained.
The official added that the number of people subject to the travel ban could still change.
Criminal law professor Matti Tolvanen stressed that the travel ban means police have reason to believe the crew may be involved in aggravated vandalism.
Crew members can be arrested if they try to violate the travel ban.
As you know, on December 25, damage was discovered to the Estlink 2 power cable running between Estonia and Finland. The next day, it was found that three more cables were damaged in the Baltic.
The Eagle S tanker, which may be part of Russia’s “shadow fleet”, is suspected of being involved in the damage to the power cables. According to media reports, spy equipment was discovered on this ship.
