A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk-yol, who was impeached due to martial law.
Yonhap said the decision came after he ignored all three subpoenas from the anti-corruption agency asking him to appear for questioning about martial law.
The President must be detained within 48 hours of the warrant being issued.
Earlier, the South Korean parliament supported the impeachment of the country’s acting president Han Duk-soo.
Han Deok-soo has been serving as interim president since Parliament impeached Chief of State Yoon Suk-yeol over a brief imposition of martial law earlier this month. He held this post for less than two weeks.
An investigation into a failed attempt to impose martial law in South Korea has revealed plans to “provoke” North Korea into an attack, Yonhap News previously wrote.
According to South Korean police, such detailed plans were saved in a notebook belonging to a former military intelligence commander. He was also later arrested as part of an investigation launched after President Yoon Seok-yol declared martial law on the night of December 3.
The plan, police said, was to provoke Pyongyang into attacking the de facto western inter-Korean maritime border known as the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea.
According to police, the plans were detailed on 60-70 pages of a notebook belonging to former army major general Roh Sang-on, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported.
Roh, who was discharged from the military in 2018 over allegations of sexual assault, is a close aide to former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who was also arrested.
Opposition parties have previously said Kim’s actions were an attempt to provoke war with Pyongyang to justify martial law.
North Korea also reported drone flights over Pyongyang and said it shot down one, blaming the South Korean military for the incident.
Authorities are investigating Yoon and his aides over the martial law decree, the 17th in South Korean history, and Yoon has since been impeached and awaiting trial in the Constitutional Court. Several military officers were also arrested.
