Media: Canada will provide Germany with turbine for Sevpotok-1

After extensive discussion, the export permit for the turbine was granted, the Canadian government said.

Canadian authorities have decided to send a refurbished Siemens turbine for the Russian Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline to Germany. This was announced on Saturday, July 9, by Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, La Presse reports.

According to the minister, the issue of turbine transfer was discussed in both Kyiv and Berlin. At the same time, Wilkinson said that regardless of Ottawa’s decision, one of the allies “will be hurt.”

As indicated, Canada recognizes that sanctions against Russia must be followed, but states that the measures imposed against Moscow “must not destroy the German economy.”

Thus, Wilkinson concluded, after extensive discussion with “friends and allies in Europe” as well as with the International Energy Agency, issued permission to export the turbine.


The turbine, built in Canada by Siemens Energy AG, was sent to Montreal for repairs but stalled due to sanctions on Russia’s aviation industry announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. Canada qualifies it as a used dual purpose and refuses to return it after repair. Due to turbine problems, gas supplies from Russia have already fallen by 60%, which has hampered Germany’s plans to increase stocks for the winter. At the same time, Berlin fears a complete cessation of Russia’s gas supplies.


Recall, on July 7 it was learned that the German government had turned to Canada with a request to resolve the issue of providing the turbine for the Nord Stream-1 gas pipeline to remove the “turbine excuse” from the Kremlin so as not to pump gas in Europe.

Ukrainian authorities have expressed to their Canadian colleagues the fear that their actions could serve as a precedent for avoiding sanctions against Russia.
