The Russian Foreign Ministry said the moratorium on the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles “is almost unviable and must be abandoned.”
Russia will lift the moratorium on the deployment of medium- and short-range missiles (INF) capable of carrying nuclear warheads. This was said on Sunday, December 29, by the country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with the Russian agency RIA Novosti.
Lavrov explained this by deploying similar weapons by the United States of America. According to him, the United States “ignored the warnings from Russia and China and, in practice, moved to the deployment of weapons of this class in different regions of the world.”
As an example of “combat testing” of a medium-range ballistic missile, Lavrov cited the Oreshnik missile attack in Ukraine.
When asked if Russia could withdraw from the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) before it expires in February 2026, Lavrov said that “now it is obvious, for example, our (Russian – ed.) moratorium on deployment of the INF Treaty is almost unviable and must be abandoned.”
Let’s remember that in July of this year it was reported that from 2026 the United States plans to deploy long-range missiles in Germany.
As reported, the United States has accused Russia of violating the INF Treaty since 2017.
