The presidential election in Belarus will be held on January 26. The election campaign in the country will last from January 1 to January 25, 2025.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys called on countries around the world to respond to the presidential elections in Belarus, scheduled for January next year. Budrys said this after a meeting with the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Saturday, December 28, writes LRT.
The head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry stressed that the upcoming elections in the Republic of Belarus are “an event organized by the regime for the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko” and called for the continuation of the policy of sanctions and increased support for democratic forces of Belarus.
“Lithuania’s national security includes a democratic and peaceful neighboring Belarus, so the 19th Lithuanian government will continue to support Belarusian democratic forces working to democratize their country,” Budrys said.
He noted that in December Lithuania raised the issue of the situation in Belarus at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels and plans to do so again in January.
“We must speak loudly about what is happening in Belarus: the continued repression of the Lukashenko regime against the Belarusian people, continued support for Russian military aggression against Ukraine and cooperation with China, Iran and North Korea, ” said the foreign minister.
He noted that the political processes taking place in Belarus will have consequences not only for Lithuania, but also for the whole of Europe and international security.
The Central Election Commission of Belarus has registered five candidates for the presidential elections
It was previously known that Belarusians abroad will be deprived of the right to vote in the presidential elections.
