The European Union has chosen USB Type-C as the common standard for charging all electronic gadgets.
A single charger law for smartphones and other electronic portable devices is in force in the European Union. The European Parliament announced it on the social network X on Saturday, December 28.
“From now on, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards and many other electronics sold in the EU must be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port, regardless of manufacturer,” the message said.
It is noted that this solution benefits the wallets of consumers and the environment.
The European media reminds that manufacturers are now required to provide devices sold in the bloc of 27 countries with a USB-C port, chosen by the EU as a common standard for charging electronic gadgets. This has long been opposed by Apple, which uses Lightning ports. Laptop makers still have extra time to adapt in early 2026.
According to a voluntary agreement with the European Commission, ten years ago, manufacturers of consumer electronics products in Europe agreed on a single standard for charging devices from dozens of devices on the market.
Let’s recall that in the fall of 2021 it became known that the European Commission is preparing a legislative proposal for a common charger for all gadgets. In October 2022, the European Parliament voted in favor of the decision.
