The United States has information that Russian air defense could have caused the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane.
White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby told reporters.
“We … saw some early signs that clearly indicated the likelihood that the plane was shot down by Russian air defense systems,” the White House press service quotes Kirby as saying.
He did not go into further detail, saying the investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing. According to him, the US Presidential Administration offered its assistance.
The Azerbaijan Airlines plane suffered “external interference” before the crash in Kazakhstan. The corresponding statement was published on the Azerbaijan Airlines website.
They said that before the passenger plane crashed near Aktau in Kazakhstan, it was subject to “external physical and technical interference. The statement did not specify what exactly this interference consisted of.
On the morning of December 25, an Embraer 190 passenger plane belonging to Azerbaijan Airlines crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau. The plane was flying from the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, to the Russian city of Grozny. There were 67 people on board, 38 of whom died.
