The United States imposed sanctions against the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party and former Prime Minister of Georgia Bidzina Ivanishvili.
All assets of this Georgian politician located in the United States or owned and controlled by American citizens will be blocked. This was reported on the website of the US Department of the Treasury.
Washington said that the decision to impose sanctions against Ivanishvili was made on the basis of a decree by President Joe Biden of April 15, 2021, in response to the “harmful actions of the Russian Federation.” These sanctions target individuals “who commit acts that undermine democratic institutions and values, and who engage in international corruption.”
As you know, mass protests began in Georgia on November 28 because the head of government, Irakli Kobakhidze, announced the suspension of the country’s European integration until 2028. Opposition Georgian political forces said they do not recognize the results of the October elections and promised to boycott the new parliament so as not to give it legitimacy.
Let us recall that on December 5, Ukraine imposed sanctions against 19 Georgian officials led by the de facto leader of the Georgian Dream party, Bidzina Ivanishivili.
Britain said it would withdraw all support for the Georgian government and limit defense cooperation until Tbilisi stops moving away from European values.
