Israel has carried out strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen.
The Israeli army – the IDF – attacked Sanaa airport, the Al-Daylami military base and the Hudeidah power plant in response to the recent shelling of Tel Aviv, where more than 10 people were injured.
According to the Israeli military, the Houthis are using civilian targets to smuggle Iranian weapons.
The IDF also hit a power plant in Hudeidah.
A week ago, Yemen’s Houthis attacked Tel Aviv, injuring more than 10 people.
The Houthis are a group that controls most of Yemen. They are supported by Iran.
The Houthi attacks began after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023. They said they supported Hamas and would attack any ship heading to Israel. It is unknown whether all the attacked ships actually went there.
In November they said they had hijacked an Israeli cargo ship. Since then, they have been attacking commercial ships with drones and ballistic missiles.
From November to December, Houthi attacks in the Red Sea increased by 500%. The threat has become so great that major shipping companies have stopped shipping in the region and insurance costs have risen 10-fold since early December. Major shipping companies including Mediterranean Shipping Company, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd and oil company BP said they were diverting ships from the Red Sea.
