The European Union has threatened Russia with new sanctions due to damage to the submarine cable between Finland and Estonia.
The Eagle S tanker, which belongs to the Russian shadow fleet, may be involved in the cable damage. This fleet is used to transport Russian oil, bypassing international sanctions. The Eagle S vessel is currently detained, yle reports.
The Estonian Foreign Minister said that damage to critical infrastructure has become so common that it is difficult to believe that the damage to the cable between Estonia and Finland is accidental. “We must view them as an attack on our infrastructure,” the minister said.
The EstLink 2 cable stopped working on the afternoon of December 25; at the time of the accident, it was transmitting 658 MW of electricity from Finland to Estonia. According to the Prime Minister of Finland, the interruption of the cable does not affect the electricity supply of Finns. The cause of the accident is not yet known, the incident is under investigation.
