The leaders of Finland, Latvia and Estonia called on the Alliance to stop the “endless debate” on how to overcome the threats posed by the Russian Federation.
Ukraine’s victory against Russia is important for the defense of Europe, which is weakly armed, and without the United States, NATO is “unprepared” to fight Vladimir Putin’s Russian Federation. This statement was made by the leaders of Finland, Latvia and Estonia, reports The Independent.
The leaders of these countries in the alliance called for an end to the “endless debate” on how to deal with the threat posed by Russia, saying it was time to strengthen Europe’s defenses.
“We are not ready. It is absolutely clear… We cannot continue to expect that the United States will continue to take an active part in European affairs,” said Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics.
According to Rinkevics, the problem is not only the unwillingness of some countries to supply weapons to Ukraine, but also that “the defense industry is not able to maintain production at the required level.”
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal added that Europe must increase its defense capabilities “because of the threat posed by Russia and because of its own inability to be a democracy and act in a rules-based world .”
These three countries are the only NATO members that share a border with Russia. Finland, Estonia and Latvia are also among the top defense spending countries in NATO.
No European leader has said they believe Trump will withdraw from NATO, but there are concerns that the US will eventually shift its attention to China and the Indo-Pacific region, including defending Taiwan.
Let’s remember that Zelensky previously criticized Scholz, in particular, for the fact that he spoke on the phone with the Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
The Ukrainian president has also repeatedly expressed publicly his misunderstanding of the reasons for the German Chancellor’s refusal to provide Taurus cruise missiles.
